Men in top hats and boaters and women in pretty dresses chatter, drink and dance under the glowing lights of this famous Parisian dance hall. Renoir loved this subject and painted it a number of times, reproducing, the patterns made by the light as it catches the figures moving around the floor. Many of Renoir’s friends acted as models for the dancers. The couple in the middle distance are his favorite model Marguerite Legrand and the Spanish painter Don Pedro de Solares y Cardenas. Like all Impressionists, Renoir painted from life as he sat in the dance hall; his friends assisted him each day in moving his canvases back and forth to his studio.

The adaptation of the human face is divided by colour into rectangles. Flat geometric squares are held within a circle representing a masked face and displaying the multi-coloured costume of a harlequin. A portrait of the artist-performer Senecio, it can be seen as a symblo of the shifting relationship between art, illusion and the world of drama. This painting dmonstrated Klee’s principles of art, in which the graphic elements of line, colour planes and space are set in motton by energy from the artist’s mind. In his imaginative doodlings, he liked, in his own word, to ‘take a line for a walk’.

The searing emotion of grief experienced by this distraught woman is reflected with great intensity in the harsh colours and rigid paint-strokes. The viewer’s attention is immediately focused on the cold blue and white area around her mouth and teeth; her eyes and forehead are dislocated – literally broken up with sorrow. the figure echoes those of Picasso’s monumental painting Guernica, executed in the same year, which portrays the massacre of women and children in the Spanish Civil War. The work shown here is one of the most expressive examples from a series by Picasso entitled ‘Weeping Women’ . The way the woman’s face has been distorted and fragmented is a development of Cubist ideas.

An enthusiastic younger gave me his very big photo of himself for a painting of oil portrait, 45×60 cm. Size : He really wanted to record his impressional time of life; when he was a monk in one temple to study in Buddhism.

The big photo showed me that he used to has an intention to frame this photo, for preservability the important time of his life; but changed his mind to have a painting portrait of his own instead.

I started this painting by the outline of all composition, a monk in the robe, and the symbolic background.

The robe was made almost to be golden, for the feeling of the goodness aim of a monk, the face of the monk was made as a strong shadow which was contrasted by the golden light, for the desire of a man’s instinct which will be in conflict to the golden goodness aim.

I made the background of the painting as two parts of colour, related to the man face; the conflict of the willfulness to get free from evil and the reality of the man.

Several Days ago, an old man came to my place in the evening, with a photo of his dad in his hand, he want me to do a good portrait of black and white drawing, 70 x 50 cm. size ;

That will be the third drawing for his own dad :

The first drawing was set in his mom house, and the second is the art work of his own son ; but he really need another bigger and excellent one of black and white drawing to hang in his bed room.

The photo clearly show the personality of a man : the old man told me that his dad was already dead for ten years ago, he was a prosecutor, who seem to be strict in his outside looking, but inner himself was kind-hearted, not just to his own family, but the other, too.

I started my work with the rough structure line of 2B pencil, after that is the detail of light and shadow, and the last is the high light of the drawing: his black suit be emphasized in the feeling of clothes by some few of light; and the necktie is be made for his polite and nice charactor.

I left the empty background for the drawing, to show the sincere personallity, and some small high light in the man’s eyes for the kind looking of the man.
